Global Workshop BCN | Building Ecologies: The five Elements

The Global Workshop: Building Ecologies: The 5 Elements, is a summer course offered by Rice Architecture and hosted by Escola d’Arquitectura La Salle – Universitat Ramon Llull in Barcelona (Spain). Through visits, talks, and hands-on activities, the students will become familiar with urban strategies and material cultures relating to architecture and ecology. This academic initiative is supported by Rice University Creative Ventures involving Rice Architecture, Rice University School of Engineering, La Salle School of Architecture, as well as local manufacturers and experts such as BEC industries, Ceramica Cumella, Suimco Materiales, S.L., Huguet & xmade, material and envelope design. The workshop integrates ecological principles into architectural design, fostering interdisciplinary cooperation and innovation in sustainable architecture.

Symposium | Collateral event Venice Biennale | “Material Ecosystems: Digital, Physical, and Cultural Assemblies”

As part of the Collateral Event: “Students as Researchers: Creative Practice and University Education” at the Venice Biennale organized by the New York Institute of Technology at the “Centro Studi e Documentazione della Cultura Armena”, the installation and symposium titled: “Material Eco-Systems: Digital, Physical, and Cultural Assemblies” will be open on the 21st and 22nd of November 2023. The proposed installation and symposium unfold design explorations and manufacturing processes in which virtual simulation tools and traditional manufacturing processes are developed in parallel, establishing a fruitful and enriching dialogue between analog and digital methods, as well as between cutting edge academic research and traditional manufacturing industry. This dialogue produces as a result “material ecosystems” that evolve towards a future in which technological developments facilitate innovative design approaches with technical, cultural, and environmental awareness.
